Solar Awakening - The Creation & Art of Backbends

This workshop is all about creating space in your backbends, building strength and openness within them, and aiming for stability and pain-free practice.

Here, Miles shares his knowledge accumulated from both his own exploration and research as well as that which he has learnt working with flexibility and contortion coaches. You will learn how to position and move your spine and the contributing joints correctly to enhance basic positions as well as work towards more advanced ones, the anatomy of backbends to which muscles need to be engaged and lengthened, and specific techniques and exercises to create and a support a backbend practice.

The workshop is catered to support a variety of levels except complete beginners. It is important to note that the ability to perform deep backbends is not a prerequisite, but we recommend having a comfortable wheel pose.

Tuning the Bow - 50-HR Immersive

Tuning the Bow - 50-HR Immersive

ABOUT

In Indian scripture, the bow represents the tuning of our mind and body, and the arrows represent our thoughts and actions. Starting with the body, we can challenge and change our inner narrative. We can begin to pull down the veils that construct and surround our experience of reality to tune it towards that which is of truth and importance, empowering us to pursue correct action and thought that is in alignment.

It is with steady, intelligent, and diligent practice of asana (yogic posture), meditation (dhyana), and pranayama (breathing practices) that we learn how to tune our mind and body.

This 50-HR week-long immersive is a deep dive into exactly that. Through extended practices incorporating breath work and sequencing inspired by the lineages of Rocket and Dharma, we'll work heavily into the fundamental components of how our practice becomes a mirror for the broader vision of our lives.

Throughout the week, we will explore the following:

  • How to train and work with acute areas of your yoga practice, e.g Samokonasana (middle splits), front splits, backbends, inversions

  • The implementation of gymnastic strength training to support your yoga practice

  • Flexibility and mobility training

  • The neurology of skill development

  • Assessing and coaching students

  • Assists

  • Handstands

Who is This Training For:

This week-long immersion is open to anyone with a consistent and regular yoga practice for at least two years. Practitioners looking to expand their knowledge for their pursuits and teachers wanting to enrich their teaching skills are welcome. Practitioners will NOT receive a certificate, whilst those who have completed a 200-HR training will receive a certificate for 50-HRs of CET|

Breathe into Creation Retreat - Shambala Gatherings, Sweden

It is only through acknowledging our own humanity within our human experience.

In March 2025, Inverted State of Mind will head to Shambala Gatherings in Sweden to bring forth a week of breathwork, yoga, and mind and body exploration led by Miles Mortensen and Matt Gasmovic.

Yoga, in all its facets, strives to bring us closer to both creation and dissolution. It is only in becoming somebody that we can become nobody, that we can move towards unity with creation. It is in becoming no body, no thought, no one that we can fully embrace our understanding of our humanness and step into the expansion of our deepest and most heartfelt truths.

It is in starting with our breath and body that we can begin to start to tune our mind, creating an inner and outer environment of reality that facilitates that of abundance, love, freedom, integrity, and humility.

Each day in the week is cultivated to mirror these qualities and ethos by providing the opportunity to move deep through practices of breath work, meditation, yoga, workshops, forest walks, Satsang, and cold immersions, alongside soaking it all up in a floating sauna or sat around a bonfire.

It’s a week to step out of what is known in the day-to-day, deconstructing bonds and loops and dissolve into possibility and creation.

Poland WORKSHOPS

to Nov 17

Poland WORKSHOPS

Inverted State of Mind is not a style of yoga per se but rather a mindset and attitude towards living and movement. It is an idea and community that exists as a space to inspire practitioners to move beyond what they believe they are capable of, both physically and mentally, through the exploration and implementation of tools that generate reflection and creativity, helping the student to gain autonomy and empowerment within themselves and their practice.

This weekend is a taste tester, a dive into that ethos.

Throughout this weekend, Miles will offer extended asana masterclasses through his two sequences – one focusing on forward folds, compression, and twisting, and the other focusing on hips, shoulders, and backbends. We will also dive into handstand and how to build a self-practice within it that is intelligent and sustainable, as well as the art of back bending and how to train them with specific conditioning exercises from gymnastics and contortion that are aimed at helping you build openness, stability and awareness into your spine, and to complete the postures without pain.

Saturday

10:00-12:00 – Masterclass

14:00-17:00 – Handstand

Sunday

10:00-12:00 – Masterclass

14:00 – 17:00 – Bakcbends

Weekend Intensive - Satya Yoga Barn, Venice, Italy

Master Class June 22/23 at 10:00-12:00 €50

During these master classes, we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the sequences that characterises Miles' style. They are unique, dynamic, and form the basis of his practice, of what he loves to share during seminars and in-depth studies. Miles combines elements from the Ashtanga, Rocket, and Dharma traditions.

These master classes are open to students of any level and tradition, except for complete beginners.

Workshop: Inversions Saturday, June 22 at 14:00-17:00 €70

This seminar is suitable for students who have recently begun to explore balancing positions on their hands with the support of the wall, as well as for students with good balance and solid foundations.

During this seminar, we will focus on three fundamental aspects: correct alignment, improvement of balance, and endurance. This seminar will allow us to acquire indispensable skills to make the practice stable, safe, but also fun and engaging. If you use the wall as support, you will learn methods to start exploring positions away from the wall.

Workshop: Backbends Sunday, June 23 at 14:00-17:00 €70

This seminar will help you deeply understand the functioning of the spine in relation to the joints used to perform backbends. Whether you are an experienced student or a beginner, this seminar will offer valuable knowledge to improve your practice. We will explore key elements that will allow us to access strong and stable backbends.

By activating the correct musculature, you will have the opportunity to cultivate strength and flexibility. To make the practice safe and effective, we will also work on correct alignment and spinal mobility.

One of the most important aspects will be the integration of bandhas (locks) and breath control. We will learn to harness the power of bandhas to create stable and comfortable postures. We will explore the connection between hips, spine, and shoulders; finally, you will learn some methods to integrate this new knowledge into your everyday practice.

Rocket Pachanga Retreat - El Salvador

El Salvador became an unexpected home in my heart when Tuqui initially invited me to teach there at the start of 2022. Something about the warmth of its people and culture made me immediately feel welcome and at home. I still teach the community I connected with there regularly online once a week, and they are some of my favourite people to teach and hang out with when I am there in El Salvador.

Going to El Salvador's beaches hit home in my heart. The beaches are these beautiful stretches of black volcanic sand, palm trees, sunsets like you wouldn't believe and a wild, beautiful ocean.

One thing I miss about being in Australia and growing up is the access to the beaches, warm sun, and endless days surfing, rocking up onto the beach only when your arms can't move anymore, and your skin is sun-kissed. Experiencing the same thing here in El Salvador was like revisiting my childhood. Surfing here is a dream. The water is warmer than you would ever believe, and waves that peel off perfectly, with options suited to all levels. It was like being a kid in a candy store again.

I've hosted a retreat here before, a small weekend one for the yoga community in El Salvador, which was an epic weekend of practice, awesome conversations, and insanely good food.

So good that Tuqui and I thought, "Let's bring the Rocket Pachanga here". We want to share all of this and more with you. And so we've rented the same houses right on the beach, hired the same amazing chef to cater for the whole week, and are putting together an epic crew of people to fill a week of yoga, laughs, sunshine, surf and food.

It's a week highlighted in my calendar, and I can't wait to board that flight there. If you're already itching to get there (just as we are), email info@milesmortensenyoga.com. But if you need a bit more info, continue reading, and I'll tell you more about the logistics and accommodation.
